If you’re looking for something great to read, or searching for the perfect book-club book, then Writers’ Centre Norwich 2013 Summer Reads is for you. Step into new stories and get lost in six brilliantly written and readable books chosen by our Readers’ Circle Book Club. Designed for lone readers as well as those in a book club, Summer Reads will introduce you to some of the most exhilarating and entertaining writing from around the world. No matter where you live, Summer Reads will introduce you to brilliant writing, which is sure to inspire your own.
The six books are: Behind the Beautiful Forevers by Katherine Boo, a heartbreaking book of top-notch reporting that asks what it’s really like to be poor in Mumbai; The Polish Boxer by Eduardo Halfon (translated by Ollie Brock, Thomas Bunstead, Lisa Dillman, Daniel Hahn & Anne McLean), a short story collection by a young Latin American writer; The Beautiful Indifference by Sarah Hall, stories that act as portals into the fascinating inner lives of women who are often hiding or recovering from something untold; This Isn’t The Sort Of Thing That Happens to Someone Like You by Jon McGregor, brooding stories set in the lowlands of the fens; A Light Song of Light by Kei Miller, a collection by a Jamaican poet; and Beside the Sea by Véronique Olmi (trans by Adriana Hunter),a thought-provoking story about how a mother’s love for her children can be more dangerous than the dark world she is seeking to keep at bay.
