John Sutherland, the Lord Northcliffe Emeritus Professor of Modern English Literature at UCL
Fiction Uncovered, the annual promotion that seeks out the best of British fiction, announced its 2012 selection on Wednesday 23 May 2012.
The eight titles selected for Fiction Uncovered 2012 will be announced at The Union, Soho, London by the Chair of Judges, John Sutherland, the Lord Northcliffe Emeritus Professor of Modern English Literature at UCL.
- Two Cows and a Vanful of Smoke by Peter Benson, Alma Books
- The Light of Amsterdam by David Park, Bloomsbury

The eight titles for the second annual Fiction Uncovered promotion were selected by a judging panel chaired by John Sutherland, Lord Northcliffe Professor Emeritus of Modern English Literature at UCL, with Katy Guest (Literary Editor, The Independent on Sunday), Jasper Sutcliffe (Head of Buying, Foyles Group) and the writer Matt Thorne.
Chair of Judges, John Sutherland says today:
“The 2012 judges have found their work both pleasurable and instructive. Fascinating things are happening to British fiction – new evolutions of genre, of regionalism, of voicings. It has long been a truism that we are living, in this country, through a golden age of fiction. But British fiction is a living, changing thing. This, I think, is the conclusion all of us privileged to enjoy these titles are agreed on.”
The eight Fiction Uncovered titles go on to be part of a summer promotion supported by retailers Foyles, Waterstones, iBookstore, Amazon and independent bookstores across the UK.
The selection will also be promoted via a special partnership with The Reading Agency (reaching libraries and reading groups).
A bespoke Fiction Uncovered window at Foyles, Charing Cross Road, London (by designer Sam Oakley), will run from Saturday 26 May till Monday 11 June. Posters, bookmarks and Fiction Uncovered tote bags, also designed by Sam Oakley, will go to retailers, libraries and other literary organisations across the UK.
Readings and interviews with the judges and the selected authors (audio and video) have been specially produced and will be made available to reader websites and publishers to help promote the eight titles, as well as being hosted at fictionuncovered.co.uk, YouTube and Vimeo.
